Camera geeks will get an absolute kick out of this. A user faced with a broken 17-85 EF-S Canon lens decided to take it apart. This is a beaut - and kinda scary when you look at just how complex these lenses are. A significant number of closeup photos are available at the actual forum — 17-85 Exposed - FM Forums
Link originally from Gizmodo, but I’ve linked you to the original Fred Miranda forum. Enjoy.

For the camera geeks in the audience : A few links from Gizmodo to drool over
Those of you who heard and knew : There are links to a professional photographer who got his hands on a Canon 5D Mark II — and shot HD Video. The video is supposedly unenhanced. Just the screencaps alone illustrate why this has me SO bloody excited.

Hellbuny has one of these, and I’m quite jealous. The Lensbaby series of experimental lenses for SLR’s basically allows for selective shifting of the focal plane, and can yield some very amusing and funky effects. They just announced a new generation of lenses — and it is making me VERY sad that I sold my SLR. Check them out :

I don’t know about you, but I’ve got five bazillion negatives sitting around, taking up way too much space. I’ve been very tempted to dump all of the prints and convert all of them to digital images — this might be the simple and @()*%&@) cheap tool to do it.

And finally, just for fun, someone photoshopped a Zoom Lens into a Coffee Mug. Now, I had this lens myself (before I sold it) — so the mere concept of taking a zoom lens that costs five hundred dollars and turning it into a MUG is painful. However, the thought of a coffee mug that could extend in size like a zoom lens? Its amusing. “Oh hi boss, wait lemme grab my coffee *retract* OW SHIT COFFEE EVERYWHERE OWOWOW”

*EDIT* Oh. My. God. I just saw the video myself. This video deserves a stolen screencap (courtesy Gizmodo)

Okay, if it wasn’t clear, this is a screen cap from HD Video, unedited off of the camera. The ONLY resizing Canon did was to drop it to 1/4th the size so it could be served on the internet EASIER. If it wasn’t clear, this allows shooters to shoot HD Video in low light with 35mm lenses — what would normally have cost 30,000 DOLLARS is now workable at a third of that. I forsee alot of music videos, indy pieces, and porn being shot on these things. Its a genre changer.
Sorry ladies, I have a new love of my life. It is a camera. The EOS 5D Mark II. I will have her.
(God I’m such a dork.)

The Canon EOS 5D was a strange beast that was lusted after by many people. Full Frame yet not outrageously priced, the hybrid was the target goal of many part time and even full time photographers who couldn’t justify the cost of Canon’s primary full frame sensor cameras.
DPReview.com has a hands on preview of the camera now.
Highlights that I’m seeing are…
-
Full Frame (Of course!)
-
21 Megapixels
-
1080p Video
-
3.0″ VGA LCD
-
Standard ISO 100 - 6400
-
Expanded ISO from 50 to 25600 (!!!!!!)
-
RAW and SRAW1
-
Image Copyright metadata Support
-
Live View with auto-focus
-
Silent Shooting in Live View (Yay!)
-
Digic 4 Processor

Well, its official. I’m selling my Canon EOS 20D, along with much of its accessories and the EF-S 17-85mm Lens. The thing has been on alot of trips and has been a faithful shooting camera — from Toronto to Hawaii and everywhere in between. Scott, you’d better take care of it!
Its going to be strange to not have an SLR for even a little while. I’ve got my G9 + flashes to tide me over. The money is going to go towards my apartment, at least until the 50D or the 5DmarkII comes out. Then I’ll be looking to buy the replacement.
… maybe. I’m also intelligent enough to realize that once I’ve sold my 20D, I may not be able to afford a replacement for a year or more.
*sniff* Camera go bye bye!

Unconfirmed: More Canon EOS 5D Mark II Specs Leak, Lookin’ Good
So I’m seeing full frame, digic IV, 21 Megapixel counts with 5fps, and 50 -> 12800 ISO. Theory is that this will be announced before the year is out.

Cameras: Leicas $11,000 Noctilux 50mm f/0.95 Lens Is a Nightvision Owl Eye For Your Camera
Oh. My. God.
You know, I could post about several things today, but I’m going to post about this instead.
Its a lens. A lens that opens to f/0.95. EVERY camera geek in the house understand I think why I just made a minor mess at my desk. Yours for the low low price of… *GASP* $11,000.
I may be lusting after alot of things, but oh man… This little baby.. Ohhhh *shudder* XD
The article goes on to link to another article discussing a f/0.7 lens. *feels fingers twitch with violent envy…*

Rumor no more: Canon announces EOS 50D | Crave, the gadget blog - CNET
Great googly moogly - Canon’s releasing the 50D already? Looks like the 40D was a stepping stone - or much more likely… Canon went “Oh shit” when Nikon released their latest cameras.
I’m still waiting for the next mid-range full frame sensor… But I have to admit, Digic 4, 12800 ISO, high res screen on back and HDMI output? I just hope that Canon isn’t overselling in a panicked response to remain competitive.
If it meets all that it claims for the pricepoint, then I may be finally swapping out my 20D.

So, in doing some reading, I found some photos shot with what is called a “Beauty Dish” - yet another method of bouncing flash. Reading about this, I’m actually excited, and I think I’m going to have to build one.. Studio Lighting - Flash Mounted homemade DIY Beauty Dish or From Soup Dish to Beauty Dish | DIYPhotography.net
A couple of fun photos today for the various 365 pictures, one night shot and one sunset shot.

No photo today. Hopefully this weekend I’ll set up a mini-studio in my guest room for some photos I have in mind for the Photo Meme. In the process, I might send glass, ice, and flaming alcohol flying everywhere. Such is the risk of doing crazy stuff.
For you photo geeks that shoot in RAW - this is a very good article. It runs almost counter to my own shooting theory, but it makes alot of sense. I’ll be testing the theory out.

… Okay, I know I know, I’m posting like a madman, but this particular post warrants IMMEDIATE CROSSPOSTING.
Camera Hacks: Turn Your Point-and-Shoot into a Super-Camera (Via Lifehacker, Via Gizmodo)
Camera people. CANON POINT AND SHOOT CAMERA PEOPLE. Its a non-destructive camera hack for Canon Point and Shoots. One that allows RAW shooting, extended data, extended shooting, SCRIPTING… I mean, its the kind of hack that might have kept me from buying my G9. And its non destructive.
Hoooooooly shit. Gimme gimme gimme. *drool*
