Tokyo Post 4.1 : Jet Lag and Clovers in Rust

We woke up today at 5:30, after going to bed at 1:30.  This led to much grumbling and finally a decision to go out at 6am.

Seems we woke up too early for Tokyo’s tastes.. Every cafe was closed.

And thus dreams are broken.

Eventually we wander around long enough for cafes to open.  We get food and head back to the hotel.   On the way, I find a little bit of urban gold.

Covered in rust, these clovers had a very unique character, when combined with the sun it had to be shot.

Tokyo Post 3 : Busy busy.

Not going to post more than one message today : very busy with studio meets and prep for show.

Seen in Ebisu — window washing is serious business!  (eep)

Also in Ebisu - eating Ramen is serious business!  (In sync, no less..)

It has been killed, the tentacle will not manage to attack us!

Tokyo Post 2.3 : City in a Bubble

Jet Lag is trying to kill me — but I’m not dead enough to forget about posting this.

Shot from the hotel room with the new fisheye lens attachment.

The streaks across the bottom — moving cars and trains. I’d say more but I nearly fell asleep on my keyboardddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd

Tokyo Post 2.2 : Green Tea Donut

Much of today was spent puttering around Tokyo getting chores done.   Supplies for booths, supplies for visits to companies, etc.

We did however have time to stop and rest.  Taka, bless his brave soul, actually decides to attempt the Starbucks “Green Tea” donut.

Reports indicate that the highly experimental donut will likely remain experimental..

Tokyo Post 2.1 : Tsukiji Fish Market

I woke up at 3:30am — and promptly started puttering around.  At 4:30, I call some compatriots, as we had decided that we absolutely be going to the Tsukiji Fish Market.  See, we’d missed it last year due to THE JAPANESE DEATH PLAGUE, and this time we were determined to take advantage of our jet lag to enjoy this.

Jim and Toshi wimped out.  Old men couldn’t take the rain.  I however manage to cajole, guilt trip and bribe Scott to coming along.  Yay!

So its 5:15am — and we walk out to the market.  It is controlled chaos.  I deliberately shoot very little because I’m spending most of my energy making sure I don’t get run into.

Amazingly enough the Tuna Auctions are open to the public again.  There’s a small door for visitors, and there’s a roped off area.  People are asked NOT to use flash, but of course we watched some dumb tourists take flash pictures and walk over the ropes among the tuna.. -_-;;

Anyhow, we shoot, then we go eat.  Mmmmm, fresh o-toro tuna on rice.  OH MY GOD.  I mean. OHHHH MY GOD.  So good.  30 dollars, but worth every penny as the same would have cost me 100 in the states.  Ohhh…..

Here, have a picture of the auction.  I will try and post regularly while out here.  :)

Tokyo Post 1.1 : Still Alive

Well, I’m here. I’m alive. My allergies or a minor cold (or both) have kicked in, and so I’m sneezing up a nasty little storm.

The flight was comfy thanks to the outbound business class upgrade. Carrying 40lbs of banners around the airport and tokyo for 4 hours was not. Perhaps hellbuny put it best when he said, “Hey.. Maybe you don’t want to carry what looks like a small Land-Air Rocket launcher on your shoulder…”

We finally got to the hotel about 9pm. At food at Yoshinoya’s, got back in, chatted business and plans until 11. I was struck with the -itis and travel fatigue, and literally fell unconcious on the bed in my travel clothes. I have no memory of the last 5 hours. I am back up thanks to jet lag, and now getting some work done..

I am struck with a crazy sense of feeling like I’m NOT in a foreign country at all. The 1 hour train ride from the airport to the hotel felt like my morning commute to work. I suspect I will not feel it until I’ve had a day to recover from travel and preparation fatigue.

Anyway - I’ll make a photo post soon. Despite how it may sound I am still completely and utterly incoherent.

PS : Odd.. my post from the airport never made it over to LJ. Are you broken crossposter? *tap tap*

A Post from the Wandering Doc

My trip begins with a regulation change that prevents me from bringing the banners on as carry on. GRRRR. (The hard cases were so huge I couldn’t transport by hand..)
Ahh well, they’re in padded soft cases and they’re solid aluminum displays.
Whats really galling is that its all just TSA trying to make us feel safe..
In other news - the new AA terminal at JFK is shiny, and I have GUM!
All is well. My next post.. From the city of the future! .

I am Doc, hear me print..

Its 3AM.  I just got home.  Was producing some last minute materials.  Much love and thanks to Scott, who came and helped me produce the materials for TAF.   What is TAF?

TOKYO INTERNATIONAL ANIME FAIR 2008

That’s TAF.  We’ll be exhibiting.  I’ll be gone for two weeks.  I leave on Saturday.  We have about 40 lbs of papers, 40 lbs of banners, and more stuff to secure when we’re in Tokyo.  I’ll be cutting foam core, gluing, designing, and working on my first few days there, leading up right until the con itself.   In fact Scott and I are sharing a room.  Oh my fucking god, this sounds like the leadup to Animazement.  All we need now is Kimmie in the room watching us tinker with electronics, and me to glue my fingers together at 3AM, giddy with caffeine and sleep deprivation.

…  Yup, this sounds like a usual con.  With added business overtones and overseas travel.  XD

Now I just need to do laundry, pack, produce videos, answer emails, prep my laptop, listen to two messages on my machine (two?  ohoh.), figure out how to solve world hunger, solve the weakening dollar crisis, save a small partridge from being stuck in a pear tree, and find a girlfriend.   … shit, did I say that last one outloud?  Yup, I did.

Its late.  I should be sleeping.  This entry has rambled on into the nonsensical.

The new banner is sweet!

Thank the airline stars!

…. I got my upgrade on the outbound flight.   WHEW!   My knees are dancing in relief!
